Reviews for Hereafter are coming in…..and it’s fascinating how many completely conflicting the initial opinions really are..

Usually, the well known, well respected movie critics form somewhere around the same general consensus when it comes to big budget blockbuster releases like this one…..and it’s amazing how some of our personal perspective seem to color, how much this movie works….or doesn’t.
The idea of psychic mediums, being taken seriously in a major release, by a well respected iconic figure in the cinematic landscape (Clint Eastwood) and a celebrated, first rate cast….seems to challenge the credulity of some critics, who clearly find themselves on the SKEPTICAL side of the street when it comes to the Hereafter……in MORE ways than one!
Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter considers the idea of an afterlife with tenderness, beauty and a gentle tact. — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times |
It has the power to haunt the skeptical, to mystify the credulous and to fascinate everyone in between. — A.O. Scott, New York Times |
Hereafter occupies some muzzy twilight zone, too woo-woo sentimental to be real, too limp to make for even a halfway decent ghost story. — David Edelstein, New York Magazine |
Hollywood once upon a time made films exploring these kinds of issues, but in today’s climate only a filmmaker like Eastwood, determined to never do the same thing twice, would have the nerve and the clout to take it on. — Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times |
