Psychic Detectives Debunked? A Critical Look at Psychic Detectives and Criminal Investigations
May 31, 2009
Are psychic detectives all a big bunch of fakes, fugazis and frauds? Many in the skeptical community certainly think so…..and will often go out of their way to point out discrepancies in many of the “boasts” made by celebrity psychics popularized on TV and elsewhere.
Here is a REALLY critical look at some popular psychics by the Sketical Inquirer, a well known repository of folks who believe ALL paranormal perusings are the hobgoblins of super small minds..:-) While I’m not a big fan of the folks behind a lot of this pyschic bashing, some of their targets I DO believe are fakes, and are not good for the betterment of genuine psychic study.
Check out the full article after the jump below….but if you are a harcore believer in some of the “targets” of their investigation, be warned – you will NOT be happy with what you read!
Allison DuBois
Allison DuBois is the “real-life” Phoenix-area clairvoyant / spiritualist whose alleged assistance to law enforcement is the basis for NBC’s drama series Medium (featuring Patricia Arquette as DuBois). Executive producer Glen Gordon Caron (creator of Moonlighting) says of DuBois: “I was amazed by her tale. She has this radio in her head that she has no control over. Wherever she looked, she saw dead people.
It was a tremendous albatross in terms of having a family life. And I thought, ‘I’ve never heard that story before, certainly not from the point of view of a soccer mom’” (Hiltbrand 2005).But Caron has been snookered. The Medium Web site boasts that “DuBois has consulted on a variety of murders or missing persons cases while working with various law enforcement agencies including the Glendale Arizona Police Department, the Texas Rangers, and a County Attorney’s office in the Homicide Bureau.”
In fact, however, both the Glendale police and the Texas Rangers deny DuBois worked with them. Glendale police spokesperson Michael Pena told SI managing editor Benjamin Radford that the detective who investigates missing persons cases “does not recall using DuBois at all in [one specific] case, or in any other cases.” And Texas Rangers spokesperson Tom Vinger stated flatly to Radford, “The Texas Rangers have not worked with Allison DuBois or any other psychics” (Radford 2005, 7).

Astral Projection Studies – More Tips, Tricks and Otherworldy Advice for Having Your First OBE
May 30, 2009
Here is an interesting series of blog posts and articles on astral projection studies, techniques and just simple tricks and tweaks that are proven to help newbies have their first out of body experience.
Some of the astral projection advice that is referenced here comes from some pretty powerful names in the OBE world – including Scott Rogo ( a long time investigator of paranomal phenomena and a well respected writer and researcher of the occult) as well as, of course, Robert Monroe, whose Monroe Center remains today one of the most well known institutes for spiritual study – specifically into altered states of conciousness. ( which is pretty much why WE’RE all here reading this stuff to learn, right..;-)?
One of the chief barriers people learning to project face is fear. Many are afraid that they may die, or be harmed in some way as a result of their projection. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
The Cantebury Institute, reknowned for its occult studies, executed an experiment in projection involving over 2,000 people. None of them were hurt in any way by this, and now, three years later, none have complained of any newly arising problems.
There are some pretty good OBE tips here too – so check out the full post at the link below the jump….I hate the “black” backrground blogs cause they’re TOUGH to read…..but other than that one little minor quible, there is some great stuff to check out here for sure!
Once you are aware that you cannot be harmed by projecting, you should begin monroe’s techniques, step by step.Step one:Relax the body. According to Monroe, “the ability to relax is the first prerequisite, perhaps even the first step itself” to having an OBE. (out of body experience) This includes bothe physical and mental relaxation. Monroe does not suggest a method of attaining this relaxation, although Progressive Muscle relaxation, coupled with deep breathing exercises (inhale 1, exhale 2, inhale 3…. until 50 or 100) are known to work well.Step two:Enter the state bordering sleep. This is known as the hypnagogic state. Once again, Monroe doesn’t recommend any method of doing this.
One way is to hold your forearm up, while keeping your upper arm on the bed, or ground. As you start to fall asleep, your arm will fall, and you will awaken again. With practice, you can learn to control the Hypnagogic state without using your arm. Another method is to concentrate on an object. When other images start to enter your thoughts, you have entered the Hypnagogic state. Passively watch these images. This will also help you maintain this state of near-sleep. Monroe calls this Condition A.

Paranormal Research Classes: Can You Learn to Be a Ghost Hunter?
May 27, 2009
An interesting question that we hear a lot ( and have asked ourselves on more than one occasion) is whether or not you can go to school to study the paranormal. Can you get a DEGREE in psychic phenomena, ghost hunting, near death experiences and the like? The answer, is…unfortunately, there are VERY few schools that actually teach this stuff in a standardized way, making careers in the paranormal a bit hard to come by.
But there are a few ( overseas in the U.K – and the Rhine institute to name a few) but Loyd Auerbach’s classes and school affiliation look especially interesting to me. Check out the whole deal at the link below. ( I’m not sure if they are still in “session” either, so you may have to check if you want to apply!)
The Search for Life After Death: 9 hours Cost: $ $150Do we survive the death of our bodies? Is there Life after Death? What is the evidence? This seminar will cover the search for evidence of Survival of Bodily Death from the earliest psychical researchers to parapsychologists of today. With an eye towards the evidence garnered and the research and investigations methods to gather it — the class covers topics such as ghosts, mediumship, near death experiences, electronic voice phenomena, out of body experiences, reincarnation and psychic experience says about whether we live on in some fashion after the deaths of our bodies.
Some time will also be spent discussing the recent research of Gary Schwartz, working with psychic mediums at the University of Arizona and the work of the Division of Personality Studies at the University of Virginia in Reincarnation and Apparition research. The importance of ESP and PK in any model of Survival will be discussed. The class will also look at the debate regarding evidence for Survival vs. the Super-Psi hypothesis from the perspective of the Survival proponents.
Theories and Models of Psychic Experience: 6 hours Cost: $100This short course covers basic models of how psychic abilities seem to work, what apparitions and hauntings are, and a survey of theories that might (or might not) explain it all.
Real Psychic Studies, Debunking the Skeptics and Searching for Truth

Here is another interesting site on real psychic studies, examining TRUE paranormal phenomena and searching for truth in a dimly lit landscape of half lit hopes that our souls truly ARE eternal…:-)
Sound heavy?
It shouldn’t be….here you are going to find MORE smart stuff on psychic phenomena, near death studies and out of body phenomena that you can read in one sitting, along with some cool and up to date multi media presentations to boot.

Welcome to SCEPCOP – The Scientific Committee Exposing Pseudo-Skeptical Cynicism of the ParanormalSCEPCOP is the world’s first organized counter-skeptic group. Back in 2001, I was the first to write a book length treatise debunking 30 primary arguments of pseudo-skeptics against the paranormal and anything that challenged orthodoxy.
Much needed at the time, it quickly became hailed in paranormal circles as a comprehensive masterpiece and the first of its kind. And now, as a protest to CSICOP, I’ve formed SCEPCOP. After all, if the pseudo-skeptics can form organized groups to attack the paranormalists, why can’t we form an organized group to attack them too? They are not infallible, but in fact rifled with obvious fallacies and twisted ways of thinking that make no sense.
Thus it’s justly due that they are exposed. The Paranormal is one of the most exciting frontiers today. Research into Consciousness, Quantum Physics and Psychic Phenomena, etc. explores venues that may unlock the mysteries of the universe and gateways to other dimensions or levels of reality and consciousness. This provides deeper insights into the larger picture of reality, meaning for our existence and hope for a better future in which humanity’s consciousness and awareness are elevated to new heights, transcending greed, lust for power, hatred, violence, ignorance, and the confines of the material paradigm in a competitive Darwinistic world.

Real Psychic Powers: More Studies of Psychic Abilities, and Paranormal Powers in the Lab ( For Smarty Pants Types Only..:-)
May 23, 2009
Who else wants more “smarty pants” psychic power facts and research? Lots of the people who have been reading our stuff, and emailing and commenting below, have been asking for more “serious” psychic research to PROVE any of this is really real, right?
Well….your wish is our continuous command! here is another interesting article taken out of the archives, talking about some of the results achieved not only from the famed “Rhine” experiments, but also some of the follow up stuff as well.
The Pearce-Pratt Distance Series ESP TestsFrom 1933 through 1934, J.B. Rhine, an assistant professor in the Psychology Department at Duke University, conducted a series of ESP tests concerning a Duke student, Hubert E. Pearce Jr., who had come forward and told J.B. Rhine that he believed he’d inherited his mother’s psychic abilities.
With the help of J.G. Pratt, a psychology graduate student acting as the assistant, J.B. Rhine ran a series of ESP card tests on Hubert Pearce. In the tests, Pratt was unaware of the card sequences, establishing what scientists call a “double-blind”, meaning that neither the test subject nor the scientist performing the experiment know the correct answers.J.B. Rhine ran a series of psychic power tests with various distances between the cards, held by Pratt, and the psychic, Pearce.
They conducted the first series at 100 yards apart, the second series at 250 yards, and then the final two series at 100 yards apart again. In 1936, J.B. Rhine published an article in the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology outlining the results of his research. Results: The results of this early parapsychology research was nowhere near conclusive. However, the results were statistically shocking. The experiments totaled 1850 trials. A statistical calculation of the probability that a person could correctly guess the right card by chance is 20% – 370 correct hits out of the 1850 trials. Hubert Pearce consistently guessed 558 correct hits, a resulting 30% success rate that was 188 successful hits above the expected results from simple chance.
These results have been debated during the centuries since, and the significance of the statistical variation remains in question even today.[edit]Princeton ESP Psychic Tests in 2000Many years later, in 2000, the Journal of Scientific Exploration published a fascinating paper by Dr. Robert Jahn of Princeton University. The paper was titled Contributions to Variance in REG Experiments, and it outlined the results of a twelve-year study conducted by Dr. Jahn and three of his fellow researchers. This particular study was conducted from 1979 through 1991, running almost perfectly parallel to the government’s ongoing ESP research at the same time.

Can Psychic Abilities Be Inherited? A Scientific Examination of ESP, Precognition and the Paranormal
May 22, 2009
Are people born to parents who have psychic abilities more likely to be psychic themselves? A pretty interesting question, don’t you think? Well, according to one Harvard professor and Science writer, the answer is YES! She argues that psychic abilities are actually genetically passed down from one generation to the next….and she’s got a whole host of data to support that…and a whole bunch of other super cool stuff you’ll probably enjoy reading.
Note: This stuff tends to be a bit for “smarty pants” types….so if you are uncomfortable with some science terms, and big words in general ( they tend to make MY head a bit fuzzy..:-) you can skip it. But – this interview from Time Magazine on her new book will give you an idea of some of the AMAZING stuff they are learning about psychic powers…and how YOU can develop your own accordingly.
Enjoy! And let us know what you think in the comments below.
You write that it’s likely everybody possesses psychic abilities, but some people are simply more successful at it? Why is that?Genetics are likely behind it. One of the things we know is that it runs in families. If you talk to psychics, they’ll tell you there’s a family history of it. Though we haven’t found it, there’s likely a gene for it. There are also cases where people haven’t had any psychic abilities until they’ve suffered head traumas.
What’s common is that these people who’ve had this head trauma, the structure and function of their brain has been changed. They’re often not able to function very well in the real world because they don’t know how to use the analytical side of their brain. Similarly, people with synesthesia [a condition in which the senses are connected, i.e. the sound of an orchestra will cause flashes of color or the taste of chicken] have less activity in their cortex.
People with autism also have a higher probability of psychic abilities. How do quantum physics and Albert Einstein’s theories relate to precognition? If you stop thinking of time the way those in the Newtonian age thought of time as an arrow, and you start thinking of time as the way that Einstein thought of it as a space-time continuum, the future already exists. Just like the entire globe of the earth is all there even though I’m not currently seeing it all here in Southern Oregon. Our brain only allows us to experience time as a series of recurrent moments

Real Psychic Stories: Share Your True Psychic Experiences, Hauntings and Other Paranormal Wierdness!
May 21, 2009
I’ve been spending a bit of time “hunting down” some cool psychic stories from around the web….covering just about everything from simple ghost stories, crisis apparitions, poltergeist phenomena, EVP recordings and a whole host of other cool stuff.
It’ TRULY amazing how many ghost stories, or psychic reading experiences start off with – ” I rarely share this…” or – ” people think I’m nut’s so I never talk about this” or simply….” I’m not sure I even believe it, but the following is true”, etc.
Amazing isn’t it? We are so conditioned to BELIEVE that nothing extraordinary can happen, that when it does, we have to excuse the experience, before we even tell it..:-)
Here is one just like it below ( one of many I’ve found so far) and I’d love to hear some good stories here on the blog, so feel free to share yours below with complete anonymous freedom..:-)
(maybe we’ll take a vote on some point at the best one and give out some sort of small prize)
This story is true and whether you believe it or not is up to you. First off, I am more of a scientific person, and quite a few times I have been accused of “over analyzing” things. I just can’t accept some things “just because.” I need explanation, reasons, facts and so forth. It was 1989 on a Halloween night.
I lived in Orlando, Florida with a friend of mine. I was 22 years old, and Al was 23, so we were not too long out of high school. We got on the subject of psychics and witchcraft somehow, and I told him I didn’t believe in that mubo jumbo stuff, but I was familiar with it because my mom used to have little parties where she would invite a psychic, and people would write a question and put it in an envelope for the psychic to answer.
There’s a lot of opinions on this, and mine at the time was- that it was just for entertainment. Let’s face it. I could ask you a few vague questions like: ” Who do you know named Bill?” Or:”Does someone in your family have a health condition?”I am bound to at least get something to go on. I could say that I see Bill’s future is…..Fill in the blank.
This being said, my opinion really changed that Halloween night, in a little town called Cassadaga, Florida. What I didn’t know then, was that Cassadaga is a “spiritualist camp”. Almost everyone living there has something to do with psychic ability, holistic healing, the power of crystals, ect. Let me tell you: THESE PEOPLE ARE THE REAL DEAL. I never thought I’d be saying this, but here’s what happened that night.
Are Psychic Abilities Natural or Developed Through Practice?
May 19, 2009
Here is an interesting little article submitted by one of our suddenly psychic blog contributors, Danny, to a popular article directory on the topic of whether or not psychic abilities are learned over time…..or constrained to those who inherit them at birth.
What do you think? Can psychic skills be learned over the course of your life, or do you need to be “borne” with them…..or you’re sh*t out of luck..;-)?
You know OUR opinion of course….but we’re interested in hearing yours:
Who else wants to know if psychic abilities are easy to learn? If you are anything like the vast majority of people who read our articles and comment on our content, the simple truth is that you probably have more than a passing interest in the paranormal, right?
It’s true…that most of the folks who are fascinated with subjects of spirit, often find themselves trying to develop the skills they read so much about.Filed Under: Are Psychic Abilities Easy to Learn?I say yes…with the following caveat. It’s LESS about learning to develop psychic abilities, and more about simply recognizing the latent skills that exist within your mind right now, and finding a creative outlet for their expression.
For example, I was reading a book the other night by the famous psychic and “spoon bender” Uri Geller, which basically expounded on his own perspective on developing psychic abilities the very same way. These are all innate abilities we ALL possess, and simply learning to develop them, much like playing the piano, or learning math, or even becoming a better basketball or soccer player…are all the process of practicing, and honing a “skill” that pretty much every human being has from jump.

More on Near Death Experiences, Controversy and the Continuation of Consciousness
May 17, 2009
Yes, near death experiences and their underlying reality ( or fantasy!) remain one of the most profound topics of conversation for people interested in “our” line of work..:-)
The good news? There are actually, as we’ve mentioned before…..some pretty important studies going on right now on testing the “survival hypothesis” using some pretty hardcore scientific methods of verification.
If these studies prove to be authenticated ( i.e. – people really DO see numbers, or things set up to “test” what happens in a hospital setting during a near death experience) it’s going to be pretty hard for the skeptical, to explain it all away as fraud.
Check out the short article below – and the link to Victor Zammit’s highly entertaining, but highly controversial website below. ( and you can also get his totally free ebook as well – which I DO recommend if you’re interested in the subject at all…which most of you, I would imagine are..:-)
Recently, several medical doctors such as Dr. Pim van Lommel (The Netherlands), Dr. Sam Parnia (UK) and Dr. Michael B. Sabom (USA) have carried out studies to determine if patients who have officially been declared clinically dead really can get Near-Death Experiences (NDEs). All of them conclude that NDEs do indeed take place among at least some of these patients. The researchers accept that consciousness is not destroyed when our brain stops functioning. They also accept that consciousness will probably continue exist after death, as in this sense, there isn’t any relevant difference between a flat EEG and brain death.Mainstream materialist scientists generally see consciousness as a byproduct of the activity of the brain. For the question of survival, it is therefore sufficient to show that the mind does not need the brain for its very existence.Near-death experiences and materialist theories of the mindIf we can prove that consciousness is present after the brain has stopped functioning, we have shown that materialism must be wrong. There are three strategies of people who want to avoid the ‘survivalist’ conclusion of recent NDE-studies.
What are Psychic Mediums….and How are They Different From Simple Psychics?
May 16, 2009
Is there a difference between psychic mediums, and just simple psychics? Is there anything “simple” about being psychic anyway?
These are some of the common questions we encounter online..and the simple truth is, depending on who you ask, everyone has a different “pithy” answer..:-)
The simple truth is that in popular parlance, a medium is someone who can channel, or contact spirits from the “other” side…..where most psychics simply believe they are able to intuit, or “see” through more refined sense of various forms of psychic sight and other cool vibrational sensitivities that most of us simply don’t have!
Here is a nice article that explains it a bit better than I can…..so check out the full story at the link below!
Psychic or Medium, what’s right for me? Mediums are best to contact if you are grieving the loss of a loved one and wish to make contact or have some kind of poof that they are fine and that there really is an after life. Generally that is what they do, they connect with the deceased.Psychic mediums or channels have the ability to communicate with the spirit side of life.
They can communicate with the deceased, as well as with other entities such as guides or angels or even your higher self. It seems to me that most people who call themself a channeler are communicating with specific higher guides, angels, or other beings of the Light. .
They generally contact the deceased loved ones and guides of the sitter. People who use the term “psychic medium” do so in order to let you know that they also have clairvoyant vision or some other psychic skill in addition to the ability to communicate with spirit. If you are looking for future predictions (should I marry, will I get the job, advice about love, business, money etc ), you should contact a psychic reader. They are much better to contact if you are looking for predictions.
I say this because generally a medium will be relaying information they are receiving from their guides or the deceased. Some guides will not give you answers to what they consider trivial questions. Some will only give information that will help you spiritually. Guides are like people, and have different interests and specialties. Ask your medium about the guides they work with. Guides are high spiritual beings of Light, don’t insult them with questions about lottery numbers or football scores!

Out of Body Experience Experiments – A Life long Journey To Explore the Unknown
May 15, 2009
Can you really objectively study your OWN out of body experiences, or…..does simply studying any amazing experience that I found this man’s experiences, and his lifelong study of his own NDE at the age of 10, shot in the gut and with a life changing out of body experience to go with it…..fascinating for his even handed “study” what really happened to him that Winter day – AND, for all that he learned on the paranormal path in the many years, and the many experiences that followed.
Why do these stories interest me, so?
Very simple! Most people either BELIEVE…..or dont’ believe. There is rarely a middle ground. So for someone so embedded in the experience, and to have so MANY amazing and unexplainable journeys to admit some “doubt” as to what these experiences meant, or really reflected – I find this much more interesting than the true believers on either side of the street.
Check out some of his story at the link below the jump- I think you’ll agree, pretty fascinating stuff indeed!
It was a bitter cold January day in northern Minnesota — about 15-below zero (Fahrenheit). As I lay crumpled and bleeding on a frozen farm field crusted with icy snow, I suddenly lifted out of my body like a hand slipping out of a glove. Floating free like a duplicate ghost of myself, I felt a wondrous blissful calm — a dynamic stillness that was yet electrifying and dazzling. On the ground I was dying, but floating above, I was hyper-alive! I was razor aware! I felt fantastically expanded! Also, to be suddenly released from the stunning, exploding pain which had shattered my being just seconds before was like the relief of salvation itself! But most of all, to find myself so obviously and clearly detached from the body which I previously thought was “all of me” was an astounding experience which changed my life forever.
My near death experience is long story, and perhaps I’ll tell it fully another day. Suffice it to say, however, that once you have had the experience of leaving your physical body behind with some other aspect of who or what you are, simply brushing that experience aside and dismissing it is not easily done. Thus, I was launched on a life-long journey to understand what happened to me that day. I wanted to know if what I experienced was a kind of elaborate illusion produced by those natural defense mechanisms which protect the human body from severe trauma — or if it was something more, such as evidence that we possess a soul, an astral body — or some kind of electromagnetic version of ourselves that can exist independently of the physical form. After all these years, and more than two decades of intense experimentation with out-of-body travel, I am still undecided if the OBE is literal, objective soul travel, or something than can be explained in more scientific terms. Let me just say, I now believe that absolutely anyone, with some effort, can induce and experience an OBE.
